AFFIRMING, TRAUMA-INFORMED THERAPY AND PSYCHIATRIC SUPPORT
LGBTQ+ Mental Health Care
Mental health care should never require you to explain, defend, or justify who you are.
At Ann Arbor Psych, we provide affirming telehealth talk therapy and psychiatric care for LGBTQ+ adults, grounded in respect, evidence-based practice, and an understanding of the unique stressors LGBTQ+ individuals often face.
LGBTQ+ individuals face unique mental health challenges shaped by stigma, discrimination, and societal barriers. Over 39% of LGBTQ+ people report experiencing mental health symptoms each year, and they are more than twice as likely as heterosexual peers to live with anxiety, depression, or suicidal thoughts. These disparities are especially pronounced for transgender, nonbinary, and LGBTQ+ youth and people of color, making safe, accessible care and support critical for well-being.
Our goal is to offer care that feels safe, informed, and genuinely supportive — not performative, not pathologizing.
What can we do for you?
Our services may be a good fit, if the following are relevent:
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary, queer, or questioning
Navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, or mood changes
Experiencing stress related to identity, disclosure, or family dynamics
Carrying the impact of discrimination, rejection, or minority stress
Managing ADHD, OCD, or neurodivergence alongside identity stress
Looking for mental health care that is affirming without assumptions
You do not need to be in crisis — and you do not need to educate your provider.
Common Mental Health Concerns
-
LGBTQ+ people are at higher risk for anxiety and depression. Rates are 2–2.5 times higher than the general population.
-
Over one-third of LGBTQ+ youth have seriously considered suicide; close to half of transgender and nonbinary youth have done so in the past year.
-
Ongoing stress and negative experiences raise the risk for trauma-related disorders and unhealthy coping mechanisms.
